Most free hosting services insert some markup into their members' pages for advertising purposes. This helps to pay the hosting expenses - the cost of bandwidth, server operation, colocation and file storage can be quite significant. However, all too often the markup inserted by the hosting services will cause a document that was originally compliant with the W3 Consortium's standards for the HTML file format to no longer validate.
If you place the Free Hosting Service HTML Validation Test Page on a free hosting service, or come across a copy that is not listed here, please notify me at crawford@goingware.com so I can add it to the list.
I do not point out whether or not a hosting service's added markup validates because this is likely to change over time (for better or worse). I am not able to track and report changes myself, so I think it's best if you test for yourself if you are evaluating hosting services for your site.
Well it looks like all the sites that used to be in the list have removed them. I'll be searching for copies that aren't listed yet and will add them soon. -- Mike
